- The artwork size is the size of your image, not necessarily the paper on which the artwork is printed. So, artwork size is excluding borders and empty space of paper surrounding the art.
- Will any part of my art be covered by the frame? What if my art has a border?
- All picture frames generally require some sort of slight overlap (1/4") to keep your art held in place.
- If your art has a border surrounding it that you do not want shown in your final frame, you have some options to cover it by not including in height & width measurements or ignoring border in measurements.
Rabbet (pronounced “rabbit”) is a technical term for the space behind the lip of the frame. This space needs to be big enough to fit everything that is being framed, the work, the backing, matting and acrylic glass.
The inner dimensions or window of the mat board should be 1/2 inch less than the dimensions of your piece of art. This provides a surface to which the work can be taped or glued. For instance, an 11 x 14 photo will have a mat board opening that measures 10-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches as in this example.
When choosing a mat for your artwork, the basic principle is that the mat should be lighter than the artwork or picture but darker than the wall. The mat is there to provide visual space between your picture, the frame and the wall. Do not make the mistake of getting too fancy when choosing a mat which in turn takes away from the artwork.
Top Mat: Top layer of a double mat; It has a larger window, which allows a small border of the bottom mat, called the reveal, to be shown.
Bottom Accent Mat: Optional second layer of mat board used in double matting; the window opening of the bottom mat surrounds the artwork.
Bottom Accent Mat Reveal: Width of the bottom accent mat, normally 3/16” (0.1875 inches), 1/4″ (0.25 inches), 3/8″ (0.375 inches) & 1/2″ (0.5 inches)
- Frames ideally should be hung at eye level, not too high and not too low, about 60 inches (or 5 feet) above the ground.
- When hanging a picture above a table you want to leave 6-8 inches of space between the bottom of the picture frame and the top of the table.
- If you’re hanging a picture frame above a couch or other piece of furniture there should be a 6-9 inch space between the furniture and the picture frame.
- Try to avoid hanging your artwork in direct sunlight. The purpose of framing art is to make it look nice and protect it.
- Place your framing wire as close to the top of the picture frame as you can. Doing this helps keep your picture flat against the wall by raising the pictures center of gravity.
